Mammo'wiiang is an Anishinaabemowin word meaning gathering. The exhibition,  Mammo'wiiang to make change gathers together a distinct group of artists highlighting work that addresses social, cultural, economic, and political conditions arising from Canada’s ongoing colonial project. Although persistent national narratives often evade the realities of our colonial past and present, colonial systems are embedded in the fabric of Canadian society today and are ever-present in the inequities that so often shape our relations. In light of these current conditions, it is crucial for decolonizing actions of Indigenous peoples to be met by a commitment for change from non-indigenous peoples. This exhibition speaks to a spectrum of decolonizing imperatives as they are mobilized by both Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists. Evolving from the co-curators’ four-year collaboration,  Mammo'wiiang to make change considers culturally responsive collaboration in this context. The artists in this exhibition enact relationships across cultures, generations, histories, species, and experience, evoking thoughtful and transformative exchange between individuals, collectives, and the land; the works in  Mammo'wiiang to make change invite the viewer into this ongoing dialogue.
