“For years, I’ve been captivated by vintage photographs, drawn to their forgotten narratives and limitless possibilities. I channeled this fascination into my first series, Unclaimed Memories, where these photographs and their untold stories serve as the central inspiration for my work.”

With a background in funerary services, Danielle Besnard wields her artist’s eye like a tool to make sense of the world around her. The compositions in Unclaimed Memories are stilted, the subjects pose uncertainly, and each image holds the irreconcilable paradox of intimacy and opacity. They serve as a reminder of the fragility of memory, the tenuous link between the “now” of the snapshot and the “then” of its discarded state.
