In Riding the Edge, Kathy Levandoski works in the tradition of panoramic painting to respond to the dramatic changes of light and colour on the Pembina escarpment. The escarpment is an anomaly of forested hills set against the surrounding farmland. It marks the western shore of prehistoric Lake Agassiz and the edge of the unique ecosystem of Riding Mountain National Park. Levandoski has always called this landscape home, and has driven the highway that runs along it countless times. In this most recent series of paintings, she focuses on a twenty-mile stretch that connects the villages of Riding Mountain and Laurier. Levandoski’s view of the landscape, as well as her responses to it, are always centered around a moving vantage point. The kaleidoscopic shifts of seasons, times of day, and constantly moving weather shape her intimate and imaginative knowledge of the escarpment as simultaneously deeply familiar and always out of reach.
