On display in the AGSM foyer, a selection of 12 fibre-based artworks from the 39-work exhibition Reclaiming Nature, by the Texile and Fibre Artists of Manitoba (TFAM).
‘The sustainable practice of reclaiming garments, fibres and fabrics into artwork, serves as a connection between human-made and natural elements. ‘
In a society where fast-fashion has become the norm, TFAM’s goal was to create an exhibit that focuses on what is already available including repurposed materials destined for the landfill, thrifted items, worn out clothing, old fabric or something handed down. TFAM’s exhibit participants overwhelmingly responded to the challenge with over 80% of the artwork materials used, being reclaimed or recycled.
The Textile and Fibre Artists of Manitoba are an inclusive group of diverse Canadian artists whose foundation rests upon the four pillars of education, networking, exhibiting, and promoting fibre as an art form. TFAM’s membership includes emerging and established artists, as well as teachers and designers. All forms of fibre-based art are encouraged and created. Many members have been recognized both nationally and internationally for their work.
Reclaiming Nature is TFAM’s tenth traveling group exhibit.
