Ben Davis’ drawings and video works explore the dynamics of his relationship to new and unfamiliar contexts – to people, culture, and land – while responding to the distinct physical and social terrain of his surroundings. His large-scale drawings and video installation give form to the process of interpreting and understanding the local. A distinct square mile section of agricultural land south of Brandon has become the starting point for this body of work, exploring its divisions that reference ownership, colonization, and difference. The contrast between the vastness of the land and the multiplicity of boundaries contained within it becomes the subject of the elaborately layered pieces that explore how this land is framed and drawn through its multiple uses.
