With the inclusion of craft-based initiatives in the professional work of contemporary artists such as Allyson Mitchell, Jenny Hart, and Niki McClure, a new wave of young artists are considering the use of craft, design, and a DIY mentality within their gallery practice. Hovercraft pairs curators Kerri-Lynn Reeves and Jenny Western in a project focusing on the work of emerging craft-based artists specifically within Manitoba. The artwork included in Hovercraft challenges the traditional mode of the ‘craft exhibition’ by operating within the interstices of traditional craft and high art through the dual consideration of a skillful technique and theoretical framework.
