During the summer of the 2010 Risa Horowitz conducted a coast to coast ‘survey’ of the Trans-Canada Highway, collecting digital still images and high-definition video along the way. With the video camera mounted on the inside of her car. Horowitz accumulated 175 hours of footage of the entire journey, while also shooting over 20,000 still photographs without looking through the camera. She only accessed the material afterwards, analyzing and categorizing it to form Blurry Canada. The resulting installation of photographs presents an intersection of genres and references that imbue the initially neutral process of systematic collection: some resemble survey photographs and tourist snapshots; others follow the traditions of landscape and colour-field abstraction. Meanwhile, the accompanying videos of the entire journey allow for a day to day unedited tracing of Horowitz’s trip, with the accompanying guide to the specific places she passed along the way.
