“What began as measuring to remember a time when I held an untenable belief in permanence has become drawing to reveal the shape of change,” is how Janet Shaw Russell describes Traces, her newest series of drawings on vellum. These intimate renderings are based on meticulously measured floor plans from her childhood home, executed through layering of graphite, blending, erasing, and hatching. The drawings are accompanied by a set of small translucent sculptural pieces whose shapes echo pods. Titled A Delicate Balance, their net-like shapes suggest the fragility of shelter, while offering a sense of protection and safety. Grouped together, they enter into dialogues as layers of familial relationships that inhabit the haunting spaces of the graphite drawings. The exhibition, while exploring ideas of memory, knowledge systems, and continuity, is also a meditation on shelter and the processes of coming to terms with change and loss.
