The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba is seeking a dedicated Part-Time Exhibitions Assistant to join our team, reporting directly to the Managing Director. This permanent position combines the roles of a preparator and registrar, responsible for assisting with exhibition setup, artwork handling, condition reporting, and documentation, ensuring the safe and professional presentation of our exhibitions. The ideal candidate will have a background in visual art, prior experience in art handling, and installation, along with strong communication skills, a proactive approach to learning, and excellent organizational abilities. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the vibrant cultural landscape of our community while working in a dynamic gallery environment.
Responsibilities:
- Install and de-install between 10 and 16 art exhibitions per year in the AGSM’s exhibition spaces (Note: De-install and install of Main Gallery Exhibitions generally occur over 9 working days.)
- Prepare Gallery venues and studios for Art School use and special events
- Oversee and maintain the organization of the AGSM’s exhibition equipment and materials
- Conduct regular condition reports on the collection of the Manitoba Arts Council, stored at the AGSM.
- Create lists of work for exhibitions including all relevant information
- Arrange art shipping
- Create and disseminate artist contracts when required.
The applicant should expect to work approximately 1,000 hours per year, with no week exceeding 40 hours, which will be allotted according to the schedule of the AGSM’s exhibitions and Art School. Additional tasks and responsibilities may be assigned in response to the successful candidate’s competencies, such as knowledge of ceramics processes or other arts specializations.
Starting at $21/hour, remitted twice monthly.
