THE BASICS: INTRODUCTION TO THE POTTER’S WHEEL
WITH DUANE CLARIDGE

This introductory class will explore the process of wheel throwing and various applications in creating simple forms on the wheel. Students will be taken through the step-by-step process starting with wedging clay, centering and throwing forms, and finishing up by glazing and firing their work.

THE NEXT STEP UP: THROWING 2 
WITH KEVIN CONLIN

Students experienced with pottery wheel basics will focus on form while learning to create bowls, plates, mugs, and vases. Experiment further with glazing, while building your knowledge of proper kiln procedures for loading and firing electric kilns.

INDEPENDENT STUDIO
WITH KEVIN CONLIN

This six-week session is an independent studio class in which students continue to develop their skills, knowledge and proficiency in ceramics. Students will work at their own speed on projects of their choice with consultation available from an onsite instructor when needed. This advanced class is open to experienced ceramics students with previous clay experience.

DRAWING BASICS - INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING 
WITH TIM BROWN

Explore a variety of drawing techniques, such as line, positive and negative space, perspective, light, shadow, and proportion. Build your confidence in drawing while developing your own creativity and interest in this fine art.

DRAWING TO TELL STORIES (AGES 13 AND UP)
WITH CURT SHOULTZ

Well known for his work in the world of illustration and comic books, bringing life to DC comic characters such as The Tick, Hawkman and even Batman, Curt will bring you on an amazing creative journey. Cartoons, comic books, comic strips, manga, and more - this weekend course is about visual storytelling through drawing. Participants will learn ways to make their drawings come alive by showing key moments in an action sequences and events. Story arcs, character design, aspects of shadow and light, action, and colour will all be explored. A workshop for both the beginner and the advanced student wanting to understand, create, and lay out their visual story.

PETS AND PEOPLE
WITH CHRIS REID

Hone your drawing and painting skills while immortalizing your loved ones, both two- and four-legged. In this class, students will explore portraiture in ink and acrylic, as well as learn about achieving proper proportion and layout of subject matter. Discover how to use colour and line to express the moods of your special subjects. Intermediate level - basic experience in either media is required.

ABSTRACT PAINTING
WITH KAY CHAPMAN

In this painting workshop, participants will learn about the world of abstraction. Through shape, form, line, and colour, students will work towards creating abstract works resonating with their own visual voice. A brief history of abstract art and some of today’s most popular abstract artists will be examined along with hands-on studio projects. Techniques on colour combinations and blending will be discussed along with material types and tools that can be used to create your abstract works.

NIGHT LIGHT: NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY 
WITH BRUCE BUMSTEAD

This course will touch on the various methods used to push the boundaries of your digital camera during low light and night time shooting. Students will explore and be given insight into the effects of long exposures, while using various camera techniques necessary to capture and record images in low light or no light environments. Class will involve hands on excursions and discussion on various aspects of night photography. Participants will be required to supply their own (SLR) camera and have working knowledge of basic digital photography.

DEMYSTIFYING DIGITAL:  A CONCISE PHOTOGRAPHIC TOUR
WITH ROB LOVATT

Photography in the digital world is evolving daily, giving the user limitless possibilities and potential control over every aspect of how an image looks and feels. In this course, students will take a look at some important techniques that can take an image from great to incredible! Topics that will be covered in this intensive five-week course are:

·         image construction that creates visual interest
·         ideal camera settings per shooting situation
·         fine-tuning the RAW file and getting greater impact
·         handling of color for greater fidelity
·         over-the-top texture enhancements 
·         methods for sharper and crisper details
·         properly preserving your best images

Bring your laptop and DSLR, and be prepared to climb a digital mountain of photographic information; basic editing experience will be a definite asset!

Printmaking

 

IMAGE MAKING WITH LINOCUT 
WITH TBA

In this six-week course, you will explore the process of developing an image for a linocut. Students will learn the basics of composing an image, and then cut and print the lino to create their own unique pieces. Safe cutting techniques, proper inking methods, as well as edition labeling and press use will be taught. You are welcome to bring along your own ideas and reference material.

This class is for experienced students who have knowledge of the printing process and who wish to continue exploring the world of studio print. Design a unique ceramic vase with multiple openings to hold tulips for a colourful spring centerpiece. Sculpt in wet clay then return for a second class to glaze your creations.

Express yourself with paint! In this class, you’ll explore examples of famous works of art, study composition, colour mixing, and paint application to create a magnificent spring landscape filled with fresh spring colours, quirky characters and dynamic designs.

Learn to make a miniature world with plants, rocks, dirt, recycled materials, and more! Sculpt little figures, creepy crawlies, petite furniture, wild animals, and let your imagination loose in your own tiny garden.

BUILDING SOUNDSCAPES AND DRAWING WITH SOUND (AGES 6-9, 9-12)
WITH MAERO OKRIKRI AND BRIT BURCH

Inspired by the exhibition Wnoondwaamin/We Hear Them, learn how artists create art with sound. Construct a soundscape and create an imaginative world which encourages deep listening. Build confidence in developing your own creative style by experimenting with new media and mind-stretching drawing exercises.

Get lost in your drawings! View examples of portraits created by famous artists and find ways to give your own artwork a creative edge. Proportion, gesture, line, shading, and colour will be explored.

CLAY GARDEN GNOMES**

Bring your imagination to life with clay as you learn sculpting techniques using slab, coil, and pinch methods. You will also be introduced to glazing to complete your gnome for the garden.
