Position: Curatorial Assistant, Art Gallery of Southwestern MB

Salary: $15.00/hr

The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba is a community-engaged contemporary art gallery located in downtown Brandon, Manitoba. The AGSM is Manitoba’s largest arts organization outside of Winnipeg, and has served the diverse population of Southwestern Manitoba for the past 112 years. We have a national reputation for the excellence of our culturally inclusive exhibition and education programming.

 

The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba is seeking a responsible and organized Curatorial Assistant. This is a unique opportunity to join a regional public art gallery team working to build and expand resources and opportunities for the local community. The experience gained from this position will benefit future curators, arts programmers, arts educators and other arts and museum management professionals. The Curatorial Assistant will work alongside the Curator, who oversees the exhibition research and programming at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba. The Curatorial Assistant will work collaboratively with the Curator and AGSM programming and facilities staff.

We are seeking an individual who has an interest in Museum / Gallery Studies, art history, or public programming. The candidate must be passionate about contemporary art in Manitoba and community-forward programming.

This position requires an employee who is fluent in the English language. The preferred candidate will provide support to the Curator and gallery projects with a focus on programs that help visitors look at art in new ways, connect art with other disciplines, and foster meaningful interactions among participants. They will attend to exhibition logistics; and broaden the audience for programs at the AGSM through proactive and strategic marketing.

In addition, the Curatorial Assistant will facilitate special events, as needed.

 

Qualifications:

- Enrolled in full-time, post-secondary studies in Museum Studies, Art History, Visual Arts, Education, or related fields and returning to full-time studies in the fall of 2022.

-Must be eligible to work in Canada, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and be between the ages of 18-30 years.

-Knowledge of gallery/museum protocols and standards;

-Experience in researching, writing community-based programs, working with artists and, an asset.

-Knowledge of contemporary art regionally, nationally and internationally.

-Excellent oral and written communication skills.

-Strong interpersonal and client relations skills.

-Exceptional research, analytical, and problem solving skills.

-Excellent leadership skills with the ability to work with volunteers and contracted summer staff. -Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and resourcefulness with the ability to work independently. -The AGSM requires a criminal reference check as a condition of employment.
