According to Cezanne, “Monet is just an eye. But what an eye!” This exhibit presents the results of many eyes beholding one image—the human form. Every Thursday evening at the AGSM, these 18 artists work side-by-side, drawing a live model. Some of the artists have been participating in the group for decades; some joined as recently as this year. Each beholds a single model through distinctive eyes. The eye of each beholder produces the I of each artwork. Some artists deconstruct the body, producing abstraction, cubism, surrealism, or symbolism. Others seek to capture the play of light on flesh, constructing impressionistic images. A few opt for realism, or the complex visual vocabulary of expert cartooning. All focus on the process of seeing how the human body moves through space. Eye of the Beholder is a seriously playful collection of diverse images by like-minded colleagues who are serious about the human form.

Illuminations is an exhibition of artwork made by eight artists during their participation in the 2016-2017 Foundation Mentorship Program. The Program is organized and supported by Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art (MAWA), which paired the eight artists with four mentors for a year. During individual and group meetings, critiques, technical demonstrations, studio visits, and trips, the artists worked to meet goals that they had set for themselves, with the mentors’ and their peers’ support.

Public Reception and Unveiling, 7:30pm, May 24, 2018

The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba has once again partnered with Sunrise Credit Union and Keywest Photo to bring you the Our Manitoba Photo Contest! The winning entries, which will be featured in the Sunrise Credit Union 2019 Calendar will be on display in the AGSM Community Gallery from May 19 to June 2. The contest was open to all Manitobans, and each photographer was able to submit a maximum of three images. The response was overwhelming and literally hundreds of photos were screened and shortlisted by a panel made up of delegates from Sunrise Credit Union, Keywest Photo and the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba. The final winning entries were then voted on by the public. Join us at 7:30pm on the evening of May 24 for a public reception and unveiling at the AGSM. Find out who won in 2018!
