Suitable for all levels, this six-week short-story writing course will provide hands-on guidance on how to explore themes in your writing. Engage with famous short stories by published authors before creating your own artistically complex characters. Students will draw inspiration from opimihaw, an exhibition of work by Mary Anne Barkhouse that is about the connection you feel to the places you live, and the magic you feel from the places you visit. Combining aspects of the visual and textual will help capture the artistic imagination with a focus on improving students’ writing technique. Students will be encouraged to share early drafts with the class, and offer some critical feedback to help hone their written art. This course will follow the Learn, Create, Edit, and Recreate format that will encourage a practice of writing every day, well past the end of this course.
