Faculty of Arts Speaker Series presents: Lisa Wood
When: Tomorrow, February 8th |3:40-4:30pm
Where: Clark Hall, room 104, Brandon University "Portraiture and the Social Role of Feasting and Drinking: Community, Intimacy, and the Grotesque"
Food is an animator, a social lubricator. It brings people together, creating community. It marks celebrations, relieves anxiety, heals wounds. The paradox of eating together is that the sensuous act of tasting and experiencing food is solitary, it brings one inside oneself, it can be grotesque. Why then do we compulsively allow others to witness the intimate act of consuming, of bringing the outside inside? In this presentation Lisa Wood will share three bodies of artwork from her exploration of food-based social occasions and relate them to social psychology, ritual eating behaviour, intimacy and the abject.
Light refreshments will be provided! Hope to see you there.
