Drawing

Introduction to Drawing with Chris Cooper
Explore a variety of drawing techniques including such components as line, positive and negative space, perspective, light and shadow as well as proportion.   Build your confidence in drawing while developing your own creativity and interest in this fine art.

Drawing in Colour with Chris Reid
This class will give you a comprehensive understanding of how to apply colour in a variety of mediums including chalk pastel, conté, and pencil crayon.  Discussions and demonstrations on colour theory, positive/negative space, and composition will also aid your development of strong drawing skills.

Open Drawing Studio: Drawing the Figure
This class is open to all students who wish to study and draw the figure in a studio setting while working independently.  Participants will each pay a small fee to cover the cost of the model for the evening.

Figure Drawing and Painting for the Beginner with Neil Stouffer
A class for beginners, you will focus on drawing and painting the figure using clothed and nude models.  Instructor Neil Stouffer will cover topics like proportion, balance, gesture drawing, and shading.

Drawing and Watercolour with Becky Chinn
Build confidence in your drawing, sketching, and painting skills while developing your creativity.  Learn basic drawing and watercolour techniques along with sketching, paint application, pen and ink techniques, proportion, and light and shadow.

Introduction to Painting with Weiming Zhao
In this course, you will learn the fundamentals of painting in either oil or acrylic mediums.  Colour theory and various painting techniques, as well as elements of composition are covered in this course using still life and images of your own interest. Watercolour 1 with Gerry Oliver
Learn to use this spontaneous and transparent paint medium in a class that will encourage you to experiment with technique, colour, and application.  With the instructor’s help, you can create your own personal watercolour expressions through a variety of styles and methods.  All levels of students from beginner to advanced are welcome.

Watercolour for Seniors with Gerry Oliver
This short course is perfect for those that have little to no experience with the watercolour medium.  Gerry will provide you with a variety of techniques, hands on demonstrations on application and colour mixing, which will help you to create watercolour paintings with confidence.  Although this class was created with seniors in mind, it is open to any adult interested in taking it.

Introduction to Linoleum Cuts with Steve Cassidy
This printmaking course will show you how to create an image by cutting into a piece of linoleum to create a print/multiple.  Steve will teach you how to create your own linocuts and introduce you to basic printing methodologies and practices.  No experience is necessary, so if you are interested in trying your hand at something new this class is perfect for you.-.

Mixed Media with Ben Davis
Ben Davis will show you how to combine a variety of mediums, such as acrylic paint, ink, charcoal, chalk pastel, conté, graphite, and watercolour to create a unique work of art.  Exploring new techniques like collage, frottage, and drawing-transfer.  Use them all together in one painting or drawing.  Take this course and Book Making with Elaine Rounds and receive a discount off both.

Book Making with Elaine Rounds

Handbuilding I with Eleanor Beever
If you’ve never worked with clay, this class is an excellent beginning.  As a general introduction to ceramics and working with clay, you will gain knowledge and skill through hands on demonstrations and practice in wedging, glazing, and hand building techniques: such as pinch pots, coil building, and slab work.

Throwing I with Eleanor Beever
Have you always wanted to learn how to make your own bowls on a potter’s wheel? Then this is the class for you.  This course concentrates on wedging, centering, raising a cylinder and moving onto bowls, turning/tooling a simple foot, basic glazing techniques, and simple decorative techniques including incising and use of tools. Students will also learn about
basic kiln operations.

Introduction to Clay for Seniors with Eleanor Beever
An excellent class for beginners, you will be provided with an overview of what ceramics is about and introduce you to the fundamentals of hand building and throwing on the potter’s wheel.  Although this class was created with seniors in mind, it is open to any adult interested in taking it.

Throwing II with Kevin Conlin
This course continues to develop and extend the skills learned in Throwing I, concentrating on development of forms: vases, mugs, plates, lids, and handles; more advanced glazing techniques, such as wax resist and oxide-glazing methodologies, will also be introduced.  This class is perfect for those interested in honing their ceramic skills.

Studio I with Kevin Conlin
The advanced student will concentrate on control and technique; development of larger forms; and particularly on using advanced throwing and handbuilding techniques to create multiple piece forms.  With a focus on composite or altered vessels, this course is a must for those individuals wishing to explore the multi-faceted world of ceramics.

Raku
Interested in experimenting with the fascinating surface effects of raku?  This workshop style course is open to any student already taking a clay course at the AGSM.   Students can purchase raku clay and make objects that will later be fired using this unique process.

Open Studio
Open to experienced ceramics students, this is a self-directed independent studio session where you can continue to develop your skills, knowledge, and proficiency in ceramics. Work at your own speed on projects of your choice.

Introduction to Black and White Photography with Bob Walberg
Learn the basics of black and white photography and darkroom techniques with Bob Walberg! D2 – Advanced Digital Photography with Rob Lovatt

4 Saturdays of Monster Mash Art Adventures and Halloween Party Art Show
Each Saturday explore your “monsteriffic” imagination through sculpture, drawing and much more.  At our fun and ghoulish classes, you will illustrate ghost stories, make crazy costumes and create creepy crawlers and monsters – all for your very own Halloween Extravaganza Party and Art Show on Saturday, October 30.

After School Snack and Art

Self Portraits in Paint with Steve Gouthro
This one-day workshop will focus on painting self-portraits from a mirror. Demonstrations and hands-on guidance by Steve Gouthro will enable you to focus on anatomy and basic paint handling.  Students can work in either acrylic or oils.   Come and check out Steve Gouthro’s exhibition “Deadringer”, Oct 14 – Nov 27, 2010.

No Pencils! Drawing in Colour with Chris Reid

Introduction to Sculpting with Clay with Chris Cooper
In this one day workshop Chris will show a variety of examples and techniques for sculpting in clay, demonstrating how moulds can be used to create a final piece in an assortment of materials.  Students will have the opportunity to create a low or high relief sculpture in clay, which will be fired in a kiln at the AGSM.

Drawing for Story with Curt Shoultz
The focus of this workshop is to learn how to tell stories with pictures.  Students will look at pre-existing works by artists, experiment with different drawing styles, and tackle the illustration of an existing story by applying basic techniques used in graphic narratives/novels.  This course is open to both teens and adults. Check out Curt’s work in AGSM’s own Art Comic.

Graffiti on Paper with TJ Vanstone
Learn how to do your own graffiti on paper.  Participants will receive hands on instruction on how to create their own hand drawn letterforms and other graphics using different mediums on paper.  This one-day workshop is sure to provide an alternative way to thinking about graffiti.  This course is open to both teens and adults.
