Wally Dion: Thunderbird Series
Curated by Amber Andersen

For First Nations People, the Thunderbird is a powerful creature with supernatural abilities. Wally Dion's interest in the image of the Thunderbird was first informed by the consistencies of its description across geographic regions and over time. Assembled from recycled computer circuit boards and resembling fossilized creatures, Dion's work in the Thunderbird Series evokes an exploration of contemporary society’s attitude towards consumption. In an era when we are capable of moving entire mountains and gouging deep into the Earth for resources, Dion questions whether the archeological discovery of the Thunderbird would be one of sacred revelation or wasteful profit. Wally Dion is a member of Yellow Quill First Nation (Salteaux). He lives and works as an artist in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Scott Waters - Expressions of Force

Scott Waters: Expressions of Force
Curated by Jenny Western

From 1989 to 1992, Scott Waters served as part of the infantry in the Third Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. Waters' experiences in the military led to his interest and research into fraternity lifestyles, utopist possibilities and social deviance through violent force. Expressions of Force is an exhibition that reflects the artist's fascination with weaponry and specifically its inherently transcendent quality. His paintings and drawings assert that weaponry is a symbol of power and influence, but simultaneously represents weakness, vulnerability and grotesqueness, or in the artist's point of view, humanity.
