FIBRE

FUNCTIONAL FIBRE TECHNIQUES
with KERRI-LYNN REEVES

In this course, Kerri-Lynn will teach students how to create fibre wall hangings through the use of two foundational techniques: macramé and weaving. Participants will learn about basic set up, knotting techniques, intermingling of yarns, and the creation of simple equipment such as a frame-loom for basic weaving. This is a perfect introductory class for those interested in creating with fibre.

PRINT

THE BASIC MODES OF PRINT
with ANTHONY WOODWARD

Gain an understanding of basic printmaking techniques and explore the creative possibilities of drypoint etching, monoprinting, and woodblock/linoleum relief printing. Throughout this course, students will learn to pull prints by hand and on the press. Proper techniques, tool usage, and labelling will be shown and discussed, along with inking methods and press usage. A great class for those wanting to take their drawing abilities to a new level while learning the age-old art of print.

OPEN PRINT STUDIO

This class is for experienced students who have knowledge of the printing process and who wish to continue exploring the world of studio print. This is an independent studio session where you can practice your skills, knowledge, and proficiency in printmaking, working independently at your own speed on projects of your choice.

CERAMICS

POTTERY WHEEL BASICS/THROWING I
with DUANE CLARIDGE

If you’re interested in learning how to work on a potter’s wheel, this is the course for you. This introductory class will explore the process of wheel throwing and various applications in creating simple forms on the wheel. Students will be taken through the step-by-step process starting with wedging clay, centering and throwing forms, to glazing and firing their work.

THROWING III/ADVANCED WHEEL
with KEVIN CONLIN

This advanced class is for students seeking greater development in throwing and glazing. The exploration of larger and more complicated forms, multi-piece forms, and refining skills already learned will create a more challenging learning experience.

HANDBUILDING FOR BEGINNER AND ADVANCED
with KEVIN CONLIN

This class is for both beginner and advanced students who want to develop their clay handbuilding skills, or take their ceramic skills to the next level. Various methods of working and constructing with clay, such as coiling, slab, and pinch methods will be introduced, as well as working with molds. This class will also look at clay types, clay preparation, slips and glazes, and the firing process. Open to all levels.

DRAWING, PAINTING, AND MIXED MEDIA

INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING
with CURT SHOULTZ

No matter your skill level, this class will build your confidence in drawing through an exploration of techniques such as line, positive and negative space, perspective, light and shadow, as well as proportion. Learn basic drawing skills while developing your own creative style and interest in this fine art.

OPEN STUDIO FIGURE DRAWING

Study and draw the figure in a studio setting while working independently in your choice of media. Participants will be asked to contribute a small fee for the model.

INTERMEDIATE  DRAWING AND PAINTING
with CHRIS REID

Improve and expand your drawing and painting skills while developing a greater understanding of the principles of art. Using a variety of drawing media, students will work on developing their visual voice.

MIX’D UP WATERCOLOURS
with GERRY OLIVER

Students will study the use of watercolour paints and other media to help challenge their creative sides in this exploratory class. Using watercolours as a foundational base, students will explore new techniques through the mixing of other media such as watercolour pencil, pen and ink, chalk pastel, and acrylic just to name a few. Watercolour tips and tricks for vibrant colour and textures will be discussed. This is a great class for those with a creative side and basic watercolour experience.

After school, come to the Art Gallery for a light, nutritious snack on us. After you fuel up, pile into the studio where you will learn how to create all sorts of artwork. From sculpting to painting, your teacher will help you find your own unique style in this energetic and entertaining class!

(10-13 YRS) CLAY STUDIO AND PAINTING/DRAWING

After school, have a light snack and bring your imagination to life with clay as you learn to manipulate and explore this incredible material. From sculptures to bowls, learn to handbuild with slabs, coils, and pinch pots. You will also be introduced to glazing and decoration! This class also includes painting, drawing, and mixed media projects.

(9-12 YRS) I HEART CLAY
WITH BRIT BURCH

Bring your imagination to life in this clay class and create beautiful and unique Valentine’s Day gifts made from soft, squishy clay. Work with pinch, slab, and coil methods to a create a Valentine’s candy dish or cake plate, and a set of handmade candle holders.

(6-9 YRS) WINTER MAGIC
WITH MAERO OKRIKRI

Find inspiration with ice crystals, snowflakes, and colour bursts as you learn to create one-of-a kind artwork to hang in the window and allow light to pass through. Learn about colour prisms and the light spectrum. These sparkling creations will be displayed in the Community Gallery’s Winter Garden Youth Exhibition for one week before making their way home to brighten your winter windows!

(6-9YRS) WHAT DO SNOWPEOPLE DO AT NIGHT? (DRAWING)
WITH MAERO OKRIKRI

Let’s use our imaginations and gather round an imaginary campfire for story time. We will read Snowmen at Night and find inspiration as we imagine and draw what our snow creations have been up to all night–snowball fights, eating snow cones, sledding adventures, and more! Work with chalk pastels to draw 3D shapes, snowscapes, aurora borealis, and use shade and shadows to show your snow people playing in the moonlight under the stars.

(6-9 YRS, 9-12YRS) HANDMADE WITH LOVE
WITH MAERO OKRIKRI AND  BRIT BURCH

Spoil yourself or someone you love with colourful, juicy, handmade soaps, and give someone a good night’s sleep with a “dream pillow.” Celebrate Valentine’s Day and create a Magic Spell Candy Valentine that they will never forget! These beautiful hand painted card/booklets are bound by hand, filled with artwork, and made complete with pockets to hold special messages and chocolate treats!

(9-12YRS) BIRD AND ANIMAL SELFIES (DRAWING)
WITH BRIT BURCH

Learn to draw close-ups of wild animals and birds. Capture details and examine feathers and fur as well as draw realistic eyes and features. You’ll explore chalk pastel techniques like blending and shading to create your own composition.

(6-9YRS) DAYDREAMING IN WATERCOLOUR, PASTELS, AND CRAYONS
WITH MAERO OKRIKRI

Learn five different watercolour/mixed media techniques and create samples of each to create a colourful, imaginary landscape. Be inspired by your dreams and create symbols that express your very own life and story. Develop your painting skills and explore colour, brushstrokes, line, and composition.

(6-9 YRS) SCULPTING ANIMALS AND CLAY PIGGY BANKS
WITH BRIT BURCH

Learn to handbuild with clay and create an animal using pinch pot and coil methods. Learn about animal shapes, how to sculpt features, and then turn your sculpture into your very own hollow piggy bank. Don’t worry, you won’t have to smash it to get your change out because you will add a stopper at the bottom!

(9-12 YRS) HERO PORTRAITS (DRAWING)
WITH MAERO OKRIKRI

Who’s your hero? Is it someone famous? Someone in your family? Learn how to draw a unique portrait of your hero as you discover more about yourself and honour someone you look up to! Develop your abilities to draw and express yourself, practice drawing faces and figures with confidence, and learn about shading and line.

(6-9 YRS) COLOUR SPLASH (DRAWING & PAINTING)
WITH BRIT BURCH

Create colourful works of art and get ready to have a blast learning new hands-on techniques. In this class, you’ll be building up a layered image using drawing, paint, and photo collage.

(9-12 YRS) NATURE FROM OUT OF THIS WORLD (WATERCOLOUR)
WITH MAERO OKRIKRI

Take a closer look at nature and find inspiration as you create a series of paintings and learn four amazing watercolour techniques: wax resist, spatter, sponge, and wet-on-wet. Express yourself with watercolour and learn to draw with ink on top of your washes.

(6-9 YRS) PUPPET DESIGN
WITH DANIELA SMITH-FERNANDEZ AND VOLUNTEERS FROM BRANDON EMBROIDERERS

Design a new character, learn to draw a design on paper and then transfer it to fabric. Daniela will show you examples of her artwork and handcrafted puppets. You’ll find inspiration in their costumes that explore culture, unique traditions of sewing, and assembling materials. Learn to paint the fabric and build the body; find inspiration from folk tales to create costumes, embellishments, and a storyline for your puppet.

(9-12 YRS) DRAWING WORKSHOP
WITH TIM BROWN

Build confidence in your drawing skills and explore line, value, shading, and proportions. Create miniature worlds with Tim using a variety of materials: action figures, toys, natural materials, and more. Build dioramas and practice drawing what you see in real life or purely in your imagination in this fun and exciting new class!

It Starts with YOU! Youth Volunteer Certificate Program (AGES 13 AND UP)

The AGSM Youth Volunteer Program requires 8 volunteer hours minimum to receive your certificate. Make art, develop your creative skills and abilities, have fun, be a part of the Art Gallery team, learn valuable job skills, and gain experience!
